Well April is nearly at its end and I've been writing and working on the new collection and trying to get everything, myself in particular, into some sort of order. It's not been easy, but at least with the written word I'm making some headway.
My whole family went to see an old friend of ours get married in Sunderland this past weekend (congratulations to Michelle and David), and we met some lovely people. Watching the old and young interact, talk and swap thoughts and ideas fueled my imagination which has resulted in a few poems springing forth into being unbidden. I was also blown away by many at the wedding, most of whom were an absolute delight (some I did not get a chance to speak too). And to my surprise and pleasure, whilst talking about reading habits one of the bridesmaids (obviously an amazingly discerning person) actually wanted copies of both (yes both) of my published collections to date. Luckily I had one copy of each in the car and although they were not pristine (nor were they signed, meaning they might be more valuable in years to come), she accepted them with grace. As soon as she said she wanted to read them, I rushed off to get them before she was able to change her mind. Rebecca is charming and I wish her and her young son all the best - plus I obviously hope she enjoys the poems! As I write, Michelle and David are abroad on their honeymoon and I hope they are having the time of their lives. Michelle looked beautiful and radiant and David looked bemused and lost, so all was as it should be at a wedding. I still wait to hear about my future working situation, but hope that things will be finalised soon so that I can move on to a new phase of my life. I hope that I can do more with my words and perhaps try to get an agent and a publisher and whilst I know that both are unlikely, this is certainly a direction I want to explore if given the chance. And here's a thing - did you know that under the Legal Deposit Libraries Act (2003), every published work in the UK has to be submitted - free of charge - to the main Libraries of the UK (6 in all)? You didn't? No, nor did I - but you do. So I have to send off 12 copies (6 of each) of my published work to be distributed to the four National Libraries (plus the Bodleian and Cambridge University Libraries) for them to record and archive. I want my work read, want to reach out and give my work and words to people to take from them what they may, but to send them off in such an official manner, under the requirement of an Act of Parliament is a bit daunting. It feels quite odd and has given me an idea for a story.... Hope you are all well (All? How many do I think read this drivel!); take care and keep reading.
